The last Adolphe Sax saxophone recorded in the Selmer Paris archives was sold in 1944.Its likely that production of Adolphe Sax instruments ceased at the onset of WWII sometime after May of 1940.Any Adolphe Sax instrument sold after this date was most likely already made or assemble from pre-existing parts.
For example, the record shows that all of the recorded Adolphe Sax instrument sales between 1940-1941 were from instruments already manufactued between 1931-36. King Super 20 Saxophone S Serial Number 1364There is a fairly detailed record of these instruments recorded in a log book in the Selmer archives in Paris up to 1936 through serial number 1364. Instruments manufactured after 1936 range in serial number from 1350-3600. King Super 20 Saxophone S Serial Numbers Jumping AroundThe log book shows the serial numbers jumping around quite a bit for the SelmerAdolphe Sax saxophones. Even so, its possible from this record to assemble a basic serial number chart for these instruments. By comparing early verses later instruments, it becomes clear that some Adolphe Sax Selmer saxophones were assembled from the old Adolphe Sax tooling and other were put togther using parts and tooling from the Selmer St. King Super 20 Saxophone S Series Was MadeThe first series was made in 1937 with serial numbers 24xxx and the second in 1939 with serial numbers 27xxx. ![]() However a different spin here: (and check their serial number lists.). And from sotw Deadlink Removed Nb, its unlikely to be an SML, they stopped production at about 27xxx. Im pretty sure Paul Cohen covered King Saxophones in Saxophone Journal a few years back - when some Swedish organisation took over UMI in the early 1980s there was still some King Super 20 parts hanging around and they assembled a few horns from these - maybe the high serial number is a continuation of some of their other wind instrument ranges and not necessary saxophones. When they originally stopped making the Super 20 in the mid-1970s it was costing H.N. Whites more to make the horn than they could sell it for. It didnt had that big King sound and the neck didnt fit well. I know two other guys who is playing on Super 20 from this era and they are also having problem with the neckjoints. UMI took over King, Conn, Armstrong. Maybe the had some interest in the company that manufactoried the late King S20s. I dont know. UMI parent company was Skne Gripen that was formed after the wharf Kockums closed down. By continuing to use this site, you are consenting to our use of cookies.
